This evening, my wife was watching The Family Stone on HBO and I was wondering if anyone else has seen it? The movie is so trope-laden, its nearly unwatchable. The liberalism of the family members seems almost designed by committee. The fact that one brother is deaf, gay, and has a black boyfriend would tip you off to that, but they like to punctuate the statement by giving Rachel McAdams character an NPR tote bag and messy hair. The Family Stone is quite possibly the most liberal representation of a family Ive ever seen put to celluloid. I imagine conservatives watching it and shouting at their screen, SEE?! SEE?! THEYRE TRYING TO INDOCTRINATE US! That said, its a very effective holiday movie. Cloying at times, but sure of itself. There are few characters to root for. Neither Sarah Jessica Parkers clueless, snobbish lead nor the judgemental family members who scorn her for not being 100% informed of their very particular set of social politics. But dammit, every time its on, we get sucked in. I have no idea why.
