This evening, on about one days notice from Pitt Students for Justice in Palestine, about 150 people came and lined up as if to buy food at the temporarily closed Conflict Kitchen. But instead of ordering food at the takeout window, each person stood and told the crowd why he/she supported Conflict Kitchen. And behind them, on the front of the Conflict Kitchen, are hundreds of notes of support stuck up with tape and sticky pads written by folks who support free speech, good food, and artistic freedom. Above all, Conflict Kitchen has been, and remains, an art installation that has received world-wide praise and recognition for its efforts to promote peace and understanding. The amount of support on the streets has been amazing. While this has, Im sure, been very hard on the staff and founders of Conflict Kitchen, it has also brought discussion about Palestine, Israel, and the US to the forefront of many discussions among people who might otherwise never have given it much thought. The effort to promote peace, justice, and understanding among us all cannot and will not be stopped by death threats from loony extremists.
