This family (says Le Neve) derive their descent from Alured, son of John Swale; which John married Alice, the sister of Walter, son of Gilbert de Gaunt, a noble baron, and had the manor of West Grenton, in Swaledale, given to Alured, his nephew; Sir Solomon Swale affirming, in 1002, that he had the original deed in Yorkshire, at his bouse of South Stainley. This John Swale is witness to several deeds of Walter de Gaunt to the priory of Bridlington, and concerning Alured, this note out of the Pipe rolls, which is under Sir William Dugdales hand; Ex magno rotulo pipce de anno tertio rcgis Henrici secnndi anno scilt. ab incarnatione Domini 1157. The descendant of Alured, William Swale, m. Isabel, daughter and heir of John Mundy, and was father of another William Swale, who m. Joan, daughter and coheir of Jeflery Applegarth, of Kiltoin. His son and heir, George Swale, m. Joan, daughter of John Vavasor, esq. of Weston, and from this marriage, after three generations, sprang John Swale, esq. who m. Anne, daughter of John Stingsby, esq. of Scriven, and was s. by his son, Thomas Swale, esq. who left by his wife, Cicely, daughter of John Pulleyn, esq. of Killing Hall, a son and heir, Solomon Swale, esq. who in. Dorothy, daughter of Christopher Wyvil, esq. of Barton Constable, and had a son and successor, Francis Swale, esq. of South Stainley, in the county of York, who m. Anne, daughter of Sampson Ingleby, esq. (a younger son of Sir William Ingleby, km. of Ripley), and had issue, Solomon, his heir. Thomas, d. nnm. John, married two wires, but had no issue. He was engaged in the service of Charles I. Charles, major of foot, in the kings service at Oxford when the city surrendered to the parliamentarians. He retired to Prance, and died in the service of the French king. Robert, captain of horse under King Charles I. and King Charles II. He married and had a sou, John. He it. at Malaga. Francis Swale had several daughters beside. He died 26th December, 10*29, and was v by his eldest son, i. Solomon Swalk, esq. of Swale Hall and South Stainley, both in the county of York, who was created a Baronet 21st June, 1060. Sir Solomon represented Aldborough in the parliament that voted the restoration of Charles II. and served the office of sheriff for his native county in 1075. He m. first, Mary, daughter of Robert Porey, eaq. of Poreys, in Norfolk; and secondly, Anne, daughter of Charles Tancred, esq. of Whirley, in Yorkshire: by the latter he had no issue; by the former he had John, I who predeceased their father unmar William, J ried. Henry, his successor. Robert, M.D. married Isabel, daughter of Thomas Mitchell, of London, and left two sous, Robert and William. Solomon, ~J Godfrey, > all died unmarried. Aldred, J Anne, married to John Winchcomb, esq. of Grays Inn.
