This foal was presented to me today having suffered with a windswept birth defect. The left limb suffers from lateral angulation and the right limb suffers from medial angulation. This is extremely rare in front limbs and is usually seen in hind limbs. The condition is related to the foals position in the mares womb. This foal has visited the veterinary hospital to have transphyseal bridging which will allow the opposite side of the growth plate to catch up with the side that is overdeveloping. Corrective farriery has involved sympathetic trimming, providing symmetry along with an even toe radius. The left foot had the lateral aspect lowered and the right foot had the medial aspect lowered. This will help to establish a level foot fall. The foal will be reassessed in 2 weeks to see if glue on extensions are required to enhance the healing process. I feel the right limb will correct with the trim alone although I would imagine the left limb will require a glue extension to provide a successful outcome of a straight limb.
