This geometry is something Buckminster Fuller called the isotropic vector matrix, a tetrahedron comprised of 20 smaller tetrahedrons. When 2 of these structures are oriented in opposite polarity they combine to form what is commonly called a star tetrahedron or a 3D Star of David also called a Merkabah. A star tetrahedron made of 40 total tetrahedrons forms a perfectly balanced geometry called a cuboctohedron at its center, something that Buckminster Fuller coined the vector equilibrium.
