This got shared with me today when talking about the joy of language. Humour is probably the most compelling case for using something near to actual English. For me it was Blackadder with the line: Ive got a plan so cunning, you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel So when people use txt speak with me, I find it holds no joy for me. It comes across as they dont really want to be communicating with me (or otherwise, they would put the effort into communicating). I was once sitting at a bus stop and was listening to these kids:- Youre stink az Wait... give us the rest of the sentence! Stinky as what? Stinky as their cousins socks? As stinky as a skunk a day before bath day? Theyve just removed all of the interesting bits and left me with a stub of what could be a brilliant sentence! With all that said, I was talking to a friend the other day and found myself laughing about the idea that I should use Youv as a word - as a travesty of how people mix up their yours and youres... What Im basically getting at is: We need to look at comedy a lot more when looking at English because its probably the most interesting and compelling reason to care. Blackadder and Monty Python in high school English classes! youtu.be/YY6kElOYcd8
