This guy is so on point. His dissection of the myriad emotions we as Montserratians go through in finding a culture to identify with finds resonance in my own soul. I have myself only recently come to understand who I really am and begun to identify with being truly African and proud of it. Too often, we do anything to deny that association. For instance, in the US, most Americans I come in contact with look down on Africans who come from Africa and even we West Indians try to disassociate ourselves by saying, No, Im Caribbean! like that makes us superior. We have to come to the place where we are cognizant of the fact that had slavery not taken us from the Continent, thats where the majority of us would have grown up and known our heritage to be. But we cant be too hard on our fellowmen for that. We only react to the way we were schooled. Its all we know. More of these articles need to be published to raise identity awareness. Thanks Nkosi!
