This guy was both lucky and smart. I took a year off University when I could no longer afford to go. I got a job as a security guard making minimum wage, working as the scale man at a rendering plant, which is where they recycle slaughterhouse by-products. Legally, anyone that weighs trucks on a scale has to be part of a Union. You have to receive training and certification. The position normally starts at $17/hr. The rendering plant figured they could pinch a few pennies by breaking the law. They did this by hiring security guards, paying them minimum wage, and forcing them to weigh trucks as part of their job, as well as their regular security work of walking around and securing the premises of the erm, animal parts reprocessing factory. After the company forced me to work twelve hour shifts on both Christmas AND New Years Eve, they fired me the day after. The reason they fired me was because a truck drove off the scale before I could punch in its weight. I ran after the truck, telling the driver to please drive onto the scale again so I could punch his weight. A supervisor I had never met before scowled as he told me Never, ever, EVER ask a truck to drive on the scale EVER again. An hour later, my supervisor came into the office and said You blew it. You are fired. Go home. After being unable to find another job for the rest of the year, I decided to go back to University and try to finish my degree. In just one year, the tuition went up in cost from $1,500 a year to $5,000. (Its closer to $8,000 today). Not only that, but in that short period of time the quality of the education had been decimated. Professors had been replaced with teaching assistants, and courses that were once one instructor to a group of twenty now had a mandatory theory component where an instructor (T.A.) taught fluff to an auditorium full of five hundred students. It was only a tenth of the quality of education I had received in 1989 for a quarter of the price.
