This happened in Vizag in the late 70s. Commanding Officer INS Circar who was also the PMC of the mess was one Capt A Singh, the name akin to the vast continent in the west. There was something in this man that with minimal professional qualifications, he had risen to command ships and establishments all along his career.. Yes, there was something in him. We young Lts used the bar and the snack bar, the so called club, for our existence. There was nothing to do in Vizag in those days. The CLUB was an apology, where you got the most unknown brands of liquor, snacks could be peanuts, literally and metaphorically. All our complaints, I mean suggestions fell on deaf ears of the mess sec and club member. So we decided to take the bull by the horn, confront the CO. There was a command reception and we decided to confront him. He was a great host but poor socially. The best of booze and eats, cashews and pistas, went to the ranks who mattered, Admirals, their staff officers and flag lts. He stood guard at the bar to ensure that every thing went honky dory. He was into his 4th Whisky Pani when I felt that it was time to move in and vent my frustrations. I let him have it with my rantings, the cup of complaints spiilth over. I overdid what I did but took heart that he wont remember half of it, next day morning as he had imbibed quite a lot. Well next day, I was informed first thing in the morning that CO wanted to see me. I went to his office and was shaken down by him on every word i uttered the previous evening. Some memory, even with 4 large drinks under his belly. Left with no choice, I repeated all my grouses, with less adjectives and adverbs. In the evening sitting down in the bar, I asked the steward, How much does the CO sahib drink? Kya Sahib, CO Sahib to peeta nahin hai To kal raat ko voh kya pee rahe the. Sahib voh to Lime Cordial tha. .
