This has been a lazy day, and Ive had time to wonder about stuff. Sometimes when I get started wondering, it sort of snowballs and takes me to strange places. I was feeding Fifi banana chips, and I wondered what circumstances led to her favorite treat being banana chips. I wasnt feeding her fast enough. Greed got the better of her and she inadvertently touched the fence with her nose. When that happens, she always reacts like shes been shot by somebody she trusted. I fetched a couple of poptarts from the barn to comfort her. While I was rubbing her poor widdle nose and saying Its OK, Sugar Pie I remembered that my granny used to call me Sugar Pie. Then I remembered that she actually used to make sugar pies. If youve never had one, imagine making a pecan pie, and discovering at the last minute that you dont have any pecans. So you make it anyway, and call it a sugar pie, since sugar is now the main ingredient. I wondered if I could find the recipe in one of her old cookbooks. And I did! Ill share it here, in case any of my friends ever wants to be in a sugar-induced coma for a little while. Make or buy a pie shell. (Granny would have made it, probably with flour she ground with her own two hands, but shes in Heaven now and it wont bother her at all if you slack off in the kitchen.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Melt 4 Tablespoons of butter, and let it cool. Whisk two cups (packed) of dark brown sugar with three eggs, until its smooth and there are no sugar lumps left. This will take a few minutes. Then blend in the cooled melted butter. Pour it in the pie shell and bake it for 45-50 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. And now my mind is going to wander on to the next waypoint between here and senility.
