This has been shared from one of young people(Patricia Njenga) who participated on March 8TH event at MATHARI MENTAL HOSPITAL my visit to MATHARI HOSPITAL.uuuww soo scary,i love how people have this misconception of the place so when i heard the Focolare Mvmnt was planning to go there for a clean up exercise and more ,my curious ,semi-adventurous soul jumped at the opportunity So,an awesome pal of mine and i decided to go,after the exercise, went to the administration place to take our bags,so the mama a very loving dedicated woman decides to let us hand what we had for them personally to them ,then goes ahead and tries to convince us that theyre normal people although theyve done unimaginable things..they need love, care and support..most are are hopeless and need that encouragement that comes from seeing new people. she decides we wont go to the civil wards but to MAXIMUM ZONE, where theres a DONT GO BEYOND THIS..sign at the gate. where the so called worst of the WORST are kept and its UNDERGROUND!!!!!! hehe,naturally i start panicking n wonder if i should call my mum and tell her exactly what id gotten myself into, and her making me the leader of one of the sections didnt help. In my mind im thinking of some movie scenario where theres a narrow hallway that leads to a dimly lit hall with cells and a really low ceiling and the patients are like trying to reach out to touch anyone walking by and making weird noises ACTUALLY! i was smh disappointed at how scary it WASNT! and having a very chilled out friendly guard take us around telling us their stories and mingling with them,some raped and sang though there was the occasional guy who was literally in his own world.and the cutest! tiny one who had so much zeal,laughing and salimian us.most sane people need a dose of him..some people are too darn serious!!! anyway ,totally made my saturday ,id have put him in my bag if i could bottom line,the people there are just chilled out,normal as long as they take their meds MENTAL ILLNESS IS JUST THAT,AN ILLNESS LIKE ANY OTHER!! the place is clean,..beautiful and spacious and i have to say i was really impressed especially with the staff.KUDOS for the dedication.
