This has got be the Golden Line of BS that Ive read this year. This is a quote from the NS DoE FB page, made on August 11 by the DoE. Regarding fines: There is no mechanism in the act to levy fines directly to a company or person. There are summary offense tickets or long-form prosecutions. The courts determine the penalty, if the person/company is found guilty. The suggestion by posters here and in some coverage of fining the company per day its not compliant simply isnt how the Environment Act works. So, what they are saying is they--the government--are helpless and powerless due to their own regulations to police corporations who poison our environment. Does it make sense to you, because I fail to follow the logic. The purpose of government is to create laws to protect the people, but they are saying they created laws that do not allow them to protect the people and there is nothing they can do about it. Correct me if I am wrong, but do Nova Scotia (and federal) government not have the power as well as a long and glorious history of changing the rules to suit their goals? If a government says it cannot change these rules, then it only reflects that doing so does not reflect their goals. And these rules, as they stand, can only have been created with the singular purpose of allowing companies to do whatever the hell they please in our province to entice them to come. For my part, I think Nova Scotians are waking up and tired of yapping for the table scraps of foreign corporations who are willing to come here and poison our land while the government pats themselves on the back for the illusion of creating jobs.
