This has to be one of my favorite songs from the 70s (along with every Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Steve Miller Band, Tom Petty and Boston song) But I particularly remember listening to this song many times as a child and even as a teenager and not having a clue what Don McLean was singing about. When I finally looked up the lyrics I was so intrigued in the history behind the words. Buddy Hollys plane crash, Bob Dylans bike crash, the fact that the Levee was actually a bar in NY near McLeans hometown. Almost every lyric references something about the 50s or 60s. Its amazing to me, the history and references behind music and what we learn from them.
