This image is taken from a picture taken by Percy Godber from the Wainuiomata Hill, 1910. In the foreground is Hutt Park. At that stage abandoned on account of the Wellington Racing Club moving to a new race course at Trentham in 1907. However the major point of interest is the construction work underway for the new pipe bridge over the the Hutt River. The building of the bridge approach on the eastern side and that opposite on Gear Island is well advanced : the work to extend Jackson Street to the western channel of the river has quite a bit to go. A construction depot has been set up to the north of the old bridge on the banks of the main channel (on Gear Island) apparently barged in. You can see a sailing vessel up stream. The old bridge is on the alignment of Waione Street (then Railway Parade) which oddly enough is on the alignment of the current pipe bridge and a temporary bridge has been built next to the first pipe bridge.. The two bridges replaced in 1911 were of a trestle construction and were for the Wellington watermain. There was no traffic deck but a pedestrian deck was added in 1885 for race patrons who had traveled on the Hutt Park Railway. The buildings in the centre over the river are the former Gear Co manure works (became Levers in 1919) with Oppenheimers to the right (on the west channel or dead arm).
