This interview with Pam Palmater is crucial for everyone – both Indigenous and Canadians – to hear. Pam offers her analysis that this decision by the Supreme Court of Canada forces Canada and the Provinces to gain ‘consent’ rather than merely ‘consulting’ through a piece of paper. This decision, she argues, bolsters Indigenous people rights and jurisdiction and creates a context where Indigenous people will foremost have the right to protect the land and water for future generations, and second a right to gain from the resources. She also argues that contrary to the propaganda that Canada spews, recognizing Aboriginal title does not take away from Canadians, rather is creates certainty for everyone to share; this decision equalizes the power for everyone.
