This is: Annie and Nurse Kim Pediatric nurse Kim insisted that I meet Annie. Annie was chatty and personable. She came to the pediatrics floor with a broken knee, requiring surgery and staples. Her schizophrenic mother was institutionalized; her father was gone. With no parents and no home, Annie was stuck in her hospital room for weeks, while social services figured out what to do next. Annie was born with spina bifida - an opening in the spinal column with the spinal cord protruding. Prior surgery had closed her back. I asked if she had pain from her injured knee. Her brown eyes smiling, she said, Silly, I cant feel my legs. My spina bifida made me paralyzed. Tomorrow I get to go to a place for kids like me. What kind of place is that I wondered? Shes the kind of kid who breaks your heart, which is why Nurse Kims heart was broken. At bedtime, Annie told Kim, I love you because you always make me go to bed on time. Another night Annie said, When I woke up from surgery, I was hoping Id find a mother waiting for me like all the other kids on this floor. Another time, after their prayers, Kim said, God is in your heart. Annie responded, How come I cant have a home with God in it? Nurse Kim could not fix Annies problems, but she gave her compassion, love and attention. Lets Pray: Dear God, bless this girl and all who suffer like her.
