This is Bonnie, Christys sister. Im sitting at Barnes Jewish Hospital with her. She wants me to update everyone on whats happening with her. So ill start from the beginning......She started running a temp and not feeling well the last week of July. Mom took her to Hermann Hospital and they transferred her to Boone Hospital on August 1st. We were told she had pneumonia. It hit her hard and by August 3rd she was on life support and sedated so deeply that we had no communication with her. After several test the drs. said she had a very bad pneumonia called pseudomonas. They were treating her for it but things were not getting better at all instead they were getting much worse. She was put into a paralytic coma for several days to rest her lungs. Still nothing improving and had very high temp. The drs thought there had to be something else causing the high temp. They said we needed to make a family decision on starting to remove any foreign body in her. One of her breast expanders had been having difficulty healing so they said it would be a very good idea to remove it for fear that it had some kind of bacteria on it that was causing the high temp. So they did surgery to remove it, at that time they went ahead and removed her port as well. However they showed no bacteria....so back to square one, trying to figure out where high temp was coming from! They tried all sorts of things taking out IUD, scans, daily blood cultures and then finally after 10-12 days a tick bourne infection showed up on cultures. Treated her for that but she was VERY sick. Lungs were in critical condition and they couldnt tell us if they would ever improve. Finally they started weaning her off sedation to see if she could start to breath a little on her own, However every time tried to take her off she would do this crazy shaking back and forth of her head and making sounds out of he mouth. They started running all kinds of Scans, MRIs and EEGs on her brain. They came in and told us on August 17 that she had brain damage and was possibly not going to be able to use her arms or legs. We were of course super upset but said no keep taking her off the sedation she is a fighter! Finally she got completely off sedation and no brain damage at all, however she cant move arms or legs. Started working with PT because we felt she just couldnt move because of being in bed for so long not using any muscles. A lot of other things happened along the way.......high fevers, infections in pic lines, central lines, resistances to antibiotiocs, yeast infections, rashes, fungus infections and plenty more! They also had to put in a trac which means she cannot talk. At one point she had three days with no fever and they wanted to move Christy to a more long term place to get better at instead of the ICU so we transferred her to a place called Landmark on a Thursday but by Saturday she was already back in ICU at Boone because her lungs just couldnt handle the move. Started running a super high temp again and Boone told us they were out of any new ideas to try so we asked to go to Barnes. They put her on a waiting list last week and at 11:30 Tuesday night the 23rd of Sept. they had a room available and transported her to Barnes. Since we have been here she has been run thru the mill! In one day she had scans, ultrasound, new trac ,bronc culture, biopsy of rash, new cathader, TEE on her heart, and a new central line put in! Today she is very sore. She wants everyone to know she loves all of you and to keep her in your prayers!!! AND she really wants a bottle of chocolate milk!!!! LOL
