This is Chinese soap nut or soapberry of the Sapindus genus. This plant is a close relative of litchis and longans, but unlike its relatives, it is not edible due to the large amount if saponins it contains. When traveling across the Chinese countryside I noticed older women collecting them by the roadside. At first glance they looked like longans but I was in a location far too cold for them so I inquired on what they were before realizing they were soap berries. Here they are used in ornamental plantings and by older people as a substitute for soap.
