This is Ricky Reine, the goat we adopted we adopted when his mother, our back yard neighbor Shirley, was murdered eight or so years ago. (Stay tuned for my story Building a House (Behind a Psycho). Hed never been out of his pen that I knew of and he was hobbled because his hooves hadnt been trimmed. I told the state police Id look after him but her six Mini Dachshunds were taken by the SPCA as they were too much for us. They all found good homes and Ricky would be mine for six weeks or so. The first time I approached him he was skittish so I spent a few days schmoozing him and then started putting a rope a rope around his neck. I started walking him around the neighborhood and realized I didnt need a rope because this guy followed me like a dog. Eventually we got him to a vet to trim the hooves. Ricky, Heide my Mini Dachshund and I all got our mugs on the front page of the Globes Metro section (if anyone can find it online please post it) walking up the street and my band, which at the time included an ambulance driver, a hospital security guard and three MDs (mental defectives) held a benefit for him so we could maybe get a farm to take him and cover his boarding and medical bills. It came where and the dog and would eat together from the same bowl and if I sat, he sat, if I laid down, he would too. He was allowed in the corner store for treats and people would turn out of their houses to wave to him as we went by, people Ive lived by for years and never knew until Ricky came along. A section of fence between my house and the deceased mother of Ricky had blown down and each morning Id take him from his pen on her property over to my yard. Each afternoon right around 4:00 hed say See ya! and scoot through the downed section of fence back to his house. One day I was in my yard building little stairs so my getting chubby dog could climb into our bed. I got frustrated and threw the thing down when it wasnt coming along like I wanted and Ricky Reine took over from there. He put his head down, backed up, and rammed the crappy stairs into pieces. To be contd
