This is Silent Night by American artist Bill Owen. It is an oil painting done on canvas and is 12 by 18. The painting depicts a cowboy sitting on his horse and looking back across the snowy, desert landscape at a bright star. The painting is naturalistic with a realistic color palette. Most of the colors are either varying intensities of brown or different hues of blue. Due to the naturalistic style the texture is lifelike. The lines are either very horizontal or very vertical which implies no movement, and a sense of peace. There is very little overlapping but some diminishing size to show differences in foreground and background. The shapes are organic. In regard to the principals of design, the painting is asymmetrical with one half being bright and open and the other being taken up by the horse and rider. The eye is immediately drawn to the horse and rider, though there is no one center of focus. Everything appears to be to scale. My personal opinion, in terms of content, is that the snowy, barren land in the dark represents the uncertain and harsh world. The man is looking at the bright star for hope and direction.
