This is Woolloomooloo circa 1978. I lived in Harmer St in the house where the Beetle ( mine) is parked. My boyfriend owned the Morris to the left. The house was sandwiched between two panel beaters as I recall, which made it very interesting when I was trying to sleep after night duty! The whole house shook when trucks hurtled down off the Cahill expressway. In fact, the whole house had a definite lean to the right. There was no kitchen floor, so I just stuck lino down over the ground and water dripped from the kitchen light whenever anyone had a shower! It was double storied but so narrow we never did get much furniture upstairs and what a to do that was. The stairs must have been only 2 feet wide. I rented it with a friend when we were desperate to find somewhere to live and we wondered why we had been given such a long lease until we noticed it was under the newly built but not yet open Eastern Suburbs Railway line! We wondered what the hell that thing was up there outside the front door! You can see from the other photos how rundown the area was and why so many places were knocked down when the area had its makeover and for once, even though I like old, I thought the area much improved. Unfortunately I do not know the names of the other streets in the photos, but you can see one gentleman briskly making off in the direction of the Mathew Talbot. I went back to look at it just before I left the area entirely in 1998 and discovered that that house had just been knocked down to make way for the Eastern Distributer. :(. I took this as a sign. My past was disappearing before my eyes. Other than that that street is still very recognisable as you can see from the Google picture. Sorry, long post. I have never been good at brevity!
