This is a CT scan of an Enterolith. Enteroliths form in the horse’s large intestine. They typically take several years to form; however, horses have been known to have quite large enteroliths within a year and a half. Enteroliths typically start out with a center of sand, a single particle of grain, or some other foreign material. Over time, mineral is laid down like layers to an onion. If there is one enterolith it will typically be round in shape. If there are multiples, one is typically round and the others are worn to fit alongside the round enterolith. In places like California, there is a high incidence of enteroliths. Measures that are taken to help prevent enteroliths from forming include feeding apple cider vinegar, reducing alfalfa hay, and increasing grain. All of these measures are aimed at reducing the intestinal pH. Water softeners have also been used where there is a high incidence of enteroliths. Methods of diagnosis include multiple colic episodes, weight loss, diarrhea, and (as in this case) the owner’s identifying and locating passed enteroliths in feces. Abdominal radiographs can be of value in diagnosing enteroliths in small bodied horses.
