This is a beautiful piece written to describe the little town Barb and I grew up in... back on the east coast of Canada... Its a simple quiet way of life, that you can argue is a better way to live... It will always be home.... I want to share with you the little place where we live. We have no police. If they are needed (which is rarely, usually during the Music Festival), they are called from the nearest town. letter to the editor We have a mayor, we have an elected council, every meeting is open to the public. All you have to do is ask. Theres a state of the art school and an outdoor pool for all to use. It costs a dollar a day for the upkeep. We live from fish caught in the sea and wild moose we hunt in the fall. We pick blueberries, bakeapples and partridge berries for pies, jams and syrup to supplement our food. ****Our children are well educated, and over 90 per cent attend university and graduate as Vets, Pilots, teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, etc.**** There is no grafitti, no violence, no worries about perverts, no theft, and we dont need to lock our doors. If a family is in need, the community provides. The children are cherished by everyone in the community. There is no abuse - it would not be tolerated by anyone. We are a small place, at one time we were eight times what we are now. But we have a bank, three groceries stores, a walk-in clinic where you wait 15 minutes, not 15 hours. If you need to go to a major hospital we have a helicopter and it takes 20 minutes to get there. We have a library, museum, pharmacy, Sears office, restaurant, hardware store, and craft shop. Our water is pure. Our air is pure. Everyone says good day when met and if you need help with something, all you do is ask. We have two churches, but one was falling into disrepair, so they decided to just have the one and now everyone prays together. We have a Ladies Institute, Lions Club, Fire Department (run by well trained volunteers). We have a music festival that attracts hundreds of people, who spend the weekend enjoying the beautiful scenery, our hospitality and watching the Orcas swimming in our bay, along side porpoise pods and huge sunfish. We have a boardwalk that surrounds the town. Everyone bought boards and put their names on it for posterity. There was no big budget for this. Our town is wheelchair accessible, we have one child in a wheelchair and no one wanted her to miss out. We use clotheslines instead of dryers, we waste nothing, clothes are passed down to whoever is that size, quilts are made for winter and sweaters, mitts hats and socks are knit. When someone is unable to fish , hunt, or pick berries, others give a portion of theirs, so no one goes hungry. People from Orillia have come here and they dont want to leave. It is Utopia.
