This is a beautifully animated video acting out a well articulated section of Dr Brené Brown’s lecture on the difference between an empathetic and a sympathetic response. According to a different behaviouralist who works closely with teachers and schools, if someone presents you an issue, but it is not your responsibility to solve, respond empathetically. For example, students might complain; I hate this subject! I refuse to do my homework, Im too tired/hungry to concentrate, Another student keeps taking my things!, or in the staff room, you might hear; My next class is a nightmare!. The goal is to lower emotions by being empathetic, and then enable them to take responsibility and solve it themselves. Sometimes, students (and fellow teachers) just want to be heard.
