This is a behaviour-based initiative which seeks to speak to the minds of drivers on the road regarding road rage. The aim is to change the mindset of drivers on the road by making them treat each other as though they were their own relatives. There are four principles to being a Road Relative: 1. Treat all road users as your own relatives, 2. Give way to faster-moving Road Relatives, 3. Allow signalling Road Relatives to move in in front of you; and lastly 4. Be Patient, we are all going somewhere. These principles are to address the following: 1. Treat all road users as your own Relatives: Most people are able to violently confront each other, or swear at each other simply because they treat each other like the strangers they are. Nullifying this first port of potential road rage by treating every road user dampens any chance of being violent towards each other in the first place. 2. Give way to faster moving Road Relatives: Some road rage is caused by slower driving cars who won’t get off the fast lane, regardless of knowing the car behind them is faster and wants to pass. But if you safely move over to the next left lane upon seeing the faster Road Relative approach from behind, you allow them to pass through easily, and freely so. This eradicates the second port of potential road rage. 3. Allow signalling Road Relatives to move in in front of you: It is commonplace for cars to switch lanes in order to join the faster lane, or to off-ramp. However some drivers always refuse to allow signalling drivers to come in in front of them, for no reason most of the time, or even accelerating to close the very gap the other driver is signalling into. Some drivers are then forced to abruptly cut in, some with rage added to it. It is this abrupt cutting-in that sometimes leads to an accident, which in-turn leads to violent confrontations on the road. But if as a Road Relative you always allow signalling relatives to come in in front of you, this third port of potential road rage will be eliminated. 4. Be Patient, we are all going somewhere: Impatience is the fourth port of potential road rage. It is impatience that leads to most of the unnecessary accidents and unwarranted bad driving on our roads. If we are all on the road, and we are aware that we are driving amongst fellow Road Relatives, we will be able to exercise more patience, knowing that no one has more right of way on the roads than the other, because as Road Relatives, We Are All Going Somewhere. These are the four principles that govern being a Road Relative, and you are invited to practice these see the positive effects on the roads, especially with the holiday season coming up.
