This is a collection of 46 examples of one of Bachs favorite forms, the chorale prelude. The form, in part developed by Bachs great predecessor Buxtehude, came from the practice of playing a hymn melody for the congregation before it was sung, so that they might become more familiar with it. Organist-composers began to ornament the melody and improvise upon it. Bachs chorale treatments are often, though not invariably, highly ornamented. In general, Bach seeks to embody musically the meaning or general mood of the verse of the hymn. The chorale preludes of the Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) are mostly short. They are so arranged as to provide a suitable prelude for most dates of the church calendar year from Advent through Whitsuntide, plus a few general titles, such as In Time of Trouble or The Catechism. Leaving aside the realm of the fugue, this collection is a microcosm of Bachs organ style. youtube/watch?v=ZxNha3IGTd8
