This is a copy of the letter that I sent to the Heritage Newspaper today... Henry Kissinger once said “It is not often that nations learn from the past, even rarer that they draw the correct conclusions from it For the most part, I believe ole Henry is right, but not when it comes to Taylor, its citizens, and its memory. Twenty years ago, former Mayor of Taylor, Cameron Priebe, went out on a political limb and asked for a millage increase to clean up the south end of Taylor. The Mayor, a former police officer, was well aware of the pitfalls of concentrating a large group of low income people into cramped apartments controlled by an uncaring landlord. This millage was passed by an almost unprecedented landslide. While the clean up was never completed as advertised, (subsequent administrations dropped the ball) some of the buildings were taken down, and green space added so that, at least the kids, would have room to play. Things did get a lot better. Now here we are, 20 years later, about to make our last payment on that millage and what do we find in the “works?” John Dingell, Jr. Veterans Village. Does McKinley Properties really think that if they slap a beloved Congressmans name on the new “village” the people of Taylor will forget the sirens, that started at dusk on Fridays and continued through Sundays, that screamed down Eureka road? We will forget the times that the rest of the city was hard pressed to get officers to respond because they were all busy in the south-end? Maybe they think that we didnt notice the added police presence needed and the added cost of that presence. Do we really believe that McKinley Properties has our veterans best interests in mind, or that this “village” will house only veterans? Well Im not falling for it. McKinley Properties can try to wave the “red, white and blue” but I know that they are only looking for more green! If they are really concerned about our veterans, they would find property more centrally located to amenities and services, and not try to cram them into the same place weve invested so much money into trying to thin out and clean up. Our veterans deserve better. I dont think the citizens of Taylor are that gullible, and I can only hope our elected officials arent either.
