This is a family we know help if you can. Ashley nor anyone should have to face this alone. For Ashley On July 30, 2009 Ashley was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy while training to return to Idaho State University for her sophomore year to play soccer. This is a type of heart disease where the pumping action of the heart is impaired (decreased) and the heart is enlarged because of the decreased pumping action. On January 22, 2010 she went into her 6 month doctor appointment to find out if her heart function had gotten better. This is all she wanted for her 20th birthday (January 25). Well this didn’t happen and so the next step was discussed - Implanting an internal cardiac device (ICD) that would monitor her heart so If she went into any type of cardiac arrest the device would deliver an electrical shock to stabilize the heart. Because Ashley’s ejection fraction was so low the ICD selected for implant was called a Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Device (CRT-D). Ashley’s procedure was performed on Thursday, January 28, 2010. The procedure went smoothly and she was released on January 29th. After arriving home she woke up with severe pains in back right lung. She couldn’t breathe deep without excruciating pain. After taking her back to the hospital and the doctors running a battery of tests it was concluded that she had contracted pneumonia from aspirating during surgery. Aspiration is the introduction of a foreign object into the lungs. She was put on intravenous therapy that included antibiotics and pain medication. It was a rough 24 hours, but on Saturday, January 30 at about 3:30pm she started feeling better.
