This is a gopher snake. A harmless snake native to California and Southern Oregon that aside from head shape and tail anatomy is near identically colored to a rattlesnake in appearance. It also has the same tail shaking and coiling habit as a rattlesnake, but gives a warning headbutt rather than a bite. It tends to live in places that get hot and dry in the spring and summer so dry leaves tend to make its appearance and behavior very convincing. It is a many segmented tail away from looking full rattlesnake at first glance. xD
