This is a large original and historical document filled out and signed twice by Abraham Lincoln’s good friend and senior law partner Stephen T. Logan. Lincoln considered him “almost a father.”After Lincoln broke off the engagement with Mary Todd he partnered in a law firm with Logan from 1841 to 1844. After Logan, Lincoln partnered with the other famous lawyer William H. Herndon. Logan was elected judge of a circuit equal to one-fourth the size of Illinois. The judge served four terms in the State Legislature, and in 1847 was a member of the State Constitutional Convention. The document is a contract to lease land in Sangamon County, Illinois (where Springfield is located). There is some foxing. Logan is mentioned several times in the recent book on Lincoln called Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. He had remained good friends with Lincoln for decades and was part of Lincolns 1860 presidential campaign team which led to Lincoln being elected. This document is not mounted or framed, but should be for preservation. The photo shows some of the large document but not all due to the limits of the scanner.
