This is a legitimate question about Godzilla (2014), not a criticism. Godzilla was first created as a living metaphor for nuclear destruction. He literally was the nuclear disaster attacking Japan based on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs dropped in 1945. The Godzilla franchise was created by a country that experienced nuclear destruction first-hand. 60 years later, in the American reboot...what does Godzilla represent? What topical 21st century ideal does Godzilla reflect? I cant say that he represents Nuclear destruction because he was created decades before the movie was set and hes not a single-minded force of destruction because hes trying to PROTECT the earth from MUTO. Even in Pacific Rim, the Kaijus represent natural disasters and how the world literally needs to come together and co-operate to stop them. To quote the opening monologue in Pacific Rim: There are things you cant fight, acts of God. You see a hurricane coming, you have to get out of the way. But when youre in a Jaeger, suddenly, you can fight the hurricane. You can win. My question is, other than blockbuster CGI spectacle, what does Godzilla represent in the reboot?
