This is a microscopic view of the fin on a Longfin Inshore Squid, connected by a suction electrode to an iPod. When the iPod sends bass frequencies to the fin, nerve axons fire causing the muscles in the squid’s colorful light-reflecting skin cells to contract... and effectively dance. The experiment was conducted by neuroscientist and TED Fellow Greg Gage and his team at Backyard Brains, which teaches kids and amateurs neuroscience through hands-on experiments.
