This is a picture of my uncle, Nolan Evans. Born in Ashton and later lived in Bryn. Nolan played football for Leyton Orient (now Clapton Orient) and joined up with his teammates in 1914 to fight in the First World War (known as pals). There is a book They Took The Lead by Stephen Jenkins that tells how Nolan spent considerable time hidden in a thickett in Delville Wood (battle of The Somme) hiding from the German soldiers who were prodding the bushes with fixed bayonets. Nolan was lucky and he came home and died in Bryn in 1949.
