This is a post about bacon. It was prompted by a series of links to collections of vegetarian slow-cooker recipes on omnivore sites, and one of those recipes in particular. For the record, Im a Flexitarian, NOT a Vegetarian. I like bacon and occasionally eat it, as I do many other omnivore foods, but I was looking for the promised vegetarian recipes. Im not angry, but I AM surprised that a person articulate enough to write a food blog like the one where the recipe was posted is also apparently uneducated about food terms. To whom it may concern: 1. BACON is a PORK product. 2. PORK is PIG MEAT. 3. PIGS are ANIMALS. 4. ANIMAL MEAT is NOT vegetarian. 5. That means BACON is NOT vegetarian. 6. Recipes containing bacon, by definition, contain meat and thus, by definition, are NOT vegetarian. There are options for people who want the taste, texture, and/or smokiness of bacon without eating animal products of any kind. Some of those options include the ubiquitous bacon-flavored soy bits often found on salad bars, and tempeh- and coconut-based ready-to-eat products. There are also lots of recipes for making vegetarian bacon-substitutes yourself. Look it up. Please, enjoy your bacon if thats how you roll, but DONT call it vegetarian. This has been a public service announcement. #CorrectingIgnorance1PostAtATime
