This is a small example of how we as Aborginal Peoples used to be... We shared taking care of each other, always ensuring everyone was equal. This is the reason Hereditary Chiefs gave potlaches, feasts was not to maintain their status as this is the new age thinking, traditionally it was to share their wealth with the people.. This is the very reason Hereditary Chiefs were held in high esteem....The sharing and giving to their people making sure all within his nation was taken care of... Sometimes they potlatched every day so this should tell you , its was not and never been about holding their status up.. It was to share with the people and to socialize. ..to show respect to loved ones that have passed on.. The only way to aquire Hereditary Chieftainship is it is handed down from the MALE descendant line ..There can be only ONE Hereditary Chief per family.. Women Cannot ever hand down or give any kind of Chieftainship to anyone as status of an HC or Chief never comes from the women... The Hereditary Chieftainship also must be given outside to the person with family present and witness ..Then to make it official to the people, by having a potlatch announcing his retirement and brings the new Hereditrary Chief of his family forward for all to witness an acknowledge .... There is no other way to aquire Hereditary Chieftainship is given down from father to son etc...Only One per family. This is the true Traditional Way of how one obtains status of Hereditary Chieftainship... The only exception to rule is the father has suddenly passed , the wife may give it to her son of choice in a potlatch, if they had no son then it may be passid down to some other male in the male side of the family that, they think is worthy to represent their family with honor..
