This is a verse I wrote after the 06 semi against the Dubs On the last Sunday in August We hit the road again We were heading off to Croker With Mickey Moran’s men The All Ireland semi final Of 2006 And a showdown with the Jackeen’s A few bad days to fix We had earned the right to be there We had not lost a game Dublin earned their day out too Their record was the same We started off with London And those boys we brushed aside The next stop it was Carrick Where Leitrim played with pride They pushed us to the limit On that lovely summers day And with a one point victory We were glad to come away Then in the Connaught final Underneath the summer sun We played a gallant Galway team And defeated them by one Of course we got no credit From the experts around the place They said that it was boring And bordering a disgrace Those annalists should know better They are really very sad When you beat Galway in a final You know you can’t be bad The quarterfinals beckoned now And Laoise stood in our way It was a fabulous game of football With fast and open play The points they flowed quite freely As the teams answered the call And when the final whistle sounded It finished fifteen all The 20th day of August Was set for the replay Another cracker of a match And this time we won the day We were now playing in the semi Against the Dublin boys in blue We were not given any chance Except by just a few Each paper that you looked at It was Dublin that was tipped Our lads were busy training They hadn’t read the script They went up there to headquarters With confidence and pride Each one of them meant business They would not be brushed aside They marched out on to Croker And for the photograph sat still And then they put their marker down When they headed for the hill The dubs were not too happy They think they own the right To line out up at hill 16 And set the fans alight But that day they learned a lesson Though they did kick up a fuss Croke Park does not belong to them It belongs to all of us And by us I don’t mean just Mayo I mean folk throughout the land For it was our contributions That built each seat and stand And now that all that’s cleared up Lets talk about the game It will hold a lasting memory For everyone that came It was hectic from the throw in Our lads made the best start They led four points to nothing As each man played his part The Dubs they then came back at us And they began to score We had the makings of a classic You could not ask for more It was nip and tuck throughout the half With little give or take And with a one point cushion We went in at the break The second half then started And Dublin took control They hit us with a few good points And then they scored a goal At one time I checked the scoreboard It was not very kind It was 2-11 to 10 points We were all of seven behind But our lads the did not panic They woke up from their nap And with a few fantastic points We slowly closed the gap Our dominance continued Mayo were on a roll O Neil sent through a great ball And Moran scored a goal The game was far from over All around was green and red Our lads kept up the pressure And soon we were ahead But the dubs they had not finished They searched bravely for a score And after a great solo run Alan Brogan got one more We were in the last few minutes now The game it was all square But Mayo dug their heals in Not one, but every player They worked the ball up towards the hill Until at last O Neill it did reach He passed it to McDonnald And the bomber scored a peach What a way to finish A game that had it all In front, behind, and seven times level What a classic game of ball The dubs bring something special When they play in Croke Park The fans all decked out in their blue They really leave their mark To hear the roar come from the hill It is worth the entrance fee The colour and the movement Is an amazing sight to see It is really something special But a greater sight by far Was the hush that came upon them When the last ball crossed the bar We have earned our final again And against Dublin once again And we know from passed experiences It will be a difficult one to win But we feel that we are ready And we will sure give it a go It is time to end the famine And take Sam to Mayo Peter Costello reasons4rhymes
