This is a very thorough and well-written article! In addition to what is in Lisas article below, there is one more important underlying mechanism which explains why people cant stop. Its the substance-affected neural networks connection to the amygdala, our brains survival-messaging-center, which begins to chemically tell our entire nervous system THAT WE CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT our drug-of-choice. Intellectually, we know we should want to stop, but our chemistry is telling us WE CANNOT STOP OR WE WILL DIE. Without proper intervention and education. this causes extreme isolation and desperation leading to more and more destructive behavior. READ ON!
