This is an amazing story of the bravest 17 year old teenager I have ever known. My Anna was busy with her upcoming senior year, playing competive volleyball and hopefully again being Captain of her team at Oviedo High. She started getting very tired and sickly when the Dr. noticed her neck was larger than normal. When she got an Ultrasound there was a large Nodule but they were confident it would be benign, because teenagers dont get Thyroid Cancer. They sent the biopsy off to Mayo Clinic and we were told to have a great summer. Volleyball season started and Anna made Captain, life was great! The second week of school we received a deafening blow, Anna has Thyroid Cancer. The protocol was to remove the entire Thyroid and do it immediately. Upon hearing the news Anna bravely said, Lets get this done as soon as possible, but only if I dont miss any Volleyball games. We met with the head Surgeon Dr. Thompson and he agreed to work around Annas games. She had the surgery 4 days later and played 5 days after surgery (her neck looked like someone had taken a switchblade across her throat). We then met with the Oncologist Dr.Sombeck who was a Volleyball player himself in college and Anna told him she would go through the Radioactive Iodine and Isolation but they would have to work around her games. Amazingly, he agreed wholeheartedly and was able to schedule this around the schools games. Anna played the entire season no matter how she felt. Her coach Jennifer Dardy was an incredible part of this whole miraclous story. From the beginning she let Anna be BRAVE and play whenever she wanted, never saying no to her, no matter bad her neck appeared or how tired she looked. The ending of this story is something out of a fairy tale. This team rallied around Anna, her bravery was contagious. They were beside her every step of the way, the entire season. The incredible thing is, they won State Champions in their division for the first time!! Thanks to Dr,Thompson and Dr, Sombecks flexibility, this child with cancer could still accomplish her dream!
