This is an article written about my son, he has since lost interest in racing????? Really???? Farmington, NC: Steve Witherow, Jr. likes Farmington Dragway’s Big Bucks Bonanza. It’s not as though the twenty-two year old Virginia based racer hasn’t experienced success throughout the country: he’s scored $20,000 triumphs at Piedmont Dragway (NC) and ATCO Raceway (NJ), a $10,000 win at Immokalee Regional Raceway’s (FL)Winter Series event, and countless big dollar wins regionally. He’s also a multi-time track champion at his local stomping grounds: Sumerduck Dragway and Old Dominion Speedway. Still, nothing quite compares to his record at “The Farm” and the annual Big Bucks Bonanza. Two years ago, Witherow, Jr. won the main event of the inaugural Big Bucks Bonanza, claiming a $50,000 windfall over final round opponent Travis Harvey. Last year, in the second edition of the event, he knocked off Rusty Larkins to claim a $10,000 pay day. Last weekend, at the 2007 event, Witherow, Jr. wasted little time getting back to his winning ways. In a ten round slugfest, he won the $10,000-to-win Friday event, driving his Nesbitt Performance Engines powered Race Tech Dragster to a final round victory over legendary North Carolina competitor Tommy Plott. In Saturday’s $50,000-to-win main event, Witherow, Jr. advanced the same machine to the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual runner-up Ken Sullivan with just five cars remaining in competition. He earned $5,000 for his 8th round effort, padding a strong weekend total. Then, in Sunday’s final $10,000-to-win event, Witherow, Jr. put an exclamation point on the weekend, turning a strong performance into near domination. Sunday, Witherow mowed thru a field of over 150 of the very best that sportsman racing has to offer to advance not one, but both of his entries into the final round! That’s right, the results read Steve Witherow, Jr. with a final round defeat of... Steve Witherow, Jr. Witherow, Jr. put an end to the drama with a semi-final round defeat of his engine builder, Brett Nesbitt, to put both entries into the final and claim the $10,000 winners purse, in addition to the $2,000 runner-up purse, bringing his weekend rake to over $25,000! “I don’t know what to say,” said the young Virginian. “I mean you don’t ever go into a race expecting to lose, but if you expect to have a weekend like this, you’re going to be disappointed more often than not! The magnitude of this isn’t lost on me: I realize how talented the field was at Farmington, and to look back on the weekend is absolutely amazing!” In the three years of the Big Bucks Bonanza, Farmington Dragway has hosted eight daily “main” events (in addition to a number of ‘hi-rollers’ gamblers races), as one of the $10,000-to-win events was rained out in 2005. Of those eight events, Steve Witherow, Jr. has graced the winners circle on four occasions! While noted bracket competitors Jason Lynch (2006) and Rustin Mayse (2007) have joined Witherow as $50,000 champions, and Cliff Shipp (2006) and Jeff O’neill (2005) have claimed daily victories, no other driver has appeared in multiple finals of the Big Bucks Bonanza in it’s three year history. With his amazing 2007 weekend in the books, Witherow, Jr. has compiled an unbelievable four wins and added a runner-up (to himself)! Witherow, Jr.’s dominating performance is more of a continuation of his 2007 season than anything else. Over the previous five weekends leading up to the Farmington event, Witherow, Jr. had appeared in a whopping eight final rounds. In those finals, he earned six victories (the other two were split even and not contested, leaving an unblemished 2007 final round record). Included in that string were a $5,000 triumph at the Raider Series event at Maryland International Raceway and a $3,000 victory at Roxboro Dragway. Witherow, Jr. was quick to thank his teammates at “Team W,” his fathers Virginia based racing team that consists of several competition vehicles designed for bracket competition. He thanked father and fellow competitor Steve Witherow, and teammate Jay Woodward. Witherow pointed to his teams alliance with quality manufacturers Nesbitt Performance Engines, Race Tech Race Cars, Jeg’s Mail Order, and Chromeworx Performance Products as a key to their continued success. Additionally, he thanked Donny Urban, Steve Sisco, Don Rudd, and his girlfriend Casey for all their help and support.
