This is an interesting TedTalk and got me thinking about how to apply these ideas with what we were taught in Ruhi Book 6. I found a comment on this page that was very relevant as well. Please, share your thoughts! Pang Khee Teik Posted 3 years ago Leadership cannot be measured by numbers. Having many followers and being commercially successful may be markers for great leadership. But they are not the only qualifiers. Simon failed to mention that knowing how to sell the why is also why Hitler and Hollywood were and still are successful. Both Hitler and Hollywood are masters at making people buy into what they believe, whether it is for the sake of racial supremacy or finding true love at first sight. Many great corporations, from Pepsi to MacDonalds, are aware of this marketing theory. That is why their marketing is based on creating desires, on selling lifestyle choices, not so much products. Simon failed to qualify his analysis of the greatness of his leadership model with a moral outcome. In essence, he has provided the template for manipulating people to do whatever you want them to do. He explained that the limbic brain, the pre-language part of the brain, which is responsible for our emotions and instincts, is the one that sustains buy-in and belief in a product. Not only is he appealing that we should trust this part of the brain more, he is suggesting that we should also manipulate peoples emotions more. It is this part of the brain that is responsible for our blind faith to violent aspects of religions, or loyalty to tyrants - whether they promise a better after-life, or a better life now. I think a real leader is someone who is able to help us reconcile both emotional and rational parts of our brains, so that we dont completely trust either on its own, but use both to constantly interrogate the impulses from the other part. A good leader, while appealing to WHY we should take action, also helps us rationalise the actions outward to see whether the action is morally viable or not. In fact, a great leader is one who enables us to judge for ourselves if he himself is a good leader or not, not based on his whys alone, but also his hows and whats. ted/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action#t-1063136
