This is an interesting piece about “Grade Inflation” at top universities. I contrast this with the opposite culture at the University of Nairobi where I did my undergraduate degree. Here the concept of grade DEflation was the norm – never allowed to score the equivalent of a clean “A”. At some point at Kabete Campus, one could only score a maximum of 66% - irrespective of whether you knew and answered the questions in and out. This was allegedly to stop students becoming big headed and possibly return for Masters programmes, threatening the jobs of the incumbent academic staff. As a result, the transcripts when presented for further academic training make you look like you flunked class! Extremely difficult to explain to American universities as you seek admission how you could have such poor grades! But we also had a few brave lecturers who were very fair with their marks. If you excelled, you excelled! Excelling in those subjects influenced my academic interests, passions and future success (rather than crushing me into the dust, like the others). I sincerely thank these heroes, Prof Mwangi (Anatomy, “the nephron”), Prof Tanui (Neurophysiology), Prof Kihurani (Surgery) and most of all, and my favourite, the late Professor Gombe (Physiology), https://facebook/video.php?v=10152803130859060&fref=nf
