This is an older article about a continuing problem that Ive been seeing a lot lately: peoples accounts getting spoofed on Facebook. This is somewhat different from getting hacked, where someone gets into your account and sends messages or does other things while pretending to be you. Spoofing is when someone harvests all the public information they can find on your profile, and creates new account pretending to be you. Its not always clear what the goal is, but its generally used as a way to try to scam or get information from people you might know. Some ways you can minimize the risk of this possibly happening to you: make sure that most of the personal information on your profile is not set to public, as well as any posts you have made that you would rather not have public. Public is the default setting for profile pictures and cover photos, which are the easiest things for impostors to swipe, but you can go in and change the settings on those to be viewable by friends for other specific audiences now.
