This is an outrage. Your local member George Christensen and our Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt have fast-tracked plans to develop Abbot Point without conducting a full Environmental Impact Assessment. The plan would allow 2 million cubic metres of dredge spoil to be dumped in a turtle breeding ground on a significant wetlands in the Reef World Heritage Area. This reckless proposal was passed quickly and sneakily, in an attempt to silence scrutiny or criticism. They were hoping we wouldnt notice this latest effort to sell out our Reef for mining profits. But we have noticed. And tomorrow is our chance to show Minister Christensen that we wont sit idly by while the Government fast-tracks the destruction of our Reef. Our wonderful friends at the Mackay Conservation Group (MCG) are organising a snap action outside Minister Christensens office. We need to send a powerful message that the community will not accept any more attacks on our Reef. Can you join them? DETAILS What: Fun Colourful Snap Action to Defend the Caley Valley Wetlands and Great Barrier Reef When: Friday 31st October, 12:30-1pm Where: George Christensens Office, 2/21 Milton Street, Mackay, QLD 4740 RSVP call MCG for more info at (07) 4953 0808. Youre more than welcome to dress up as a reef animal, or rock a wetsuit and flippers, but its in no way required. Whats most important is to have fun and show your support for the Reef. And if your friends and family love the Reef (which of course they do), then invite them along too. Sam R and Adam, for the GetUp team PS - You might recognise the name. MCG is the group who are acting as fearless litigants in the case youre funding against Abbot Point dredging! PPS - If you cant make it tomorrow at such short notice, you can call Greg Hunt today to express your outrage and ask him to conduct a a proper Environmental Impact Assessment: (02) 6277 7920
