In 2012 former Rikers Island Correction officer Lorenzo Steele Jr. created a visual arts program called “Behind these Prison Walls”. This very unique program gives a multidimensional approach to analyzing the criminal justice system through the arts. The main focus of the exhibition is to improve student and public safety by analyzing problems and behavior that can lead to criminal activity. Our goal is to inform, educate, and empower individuals and steer at-risk youth away from the criminal justice system. The exhibition consists of a 15 images that were taken inside of the most violent adolescent prison in the nation. Viewers will get to look inside of Rikers Island, receive a power point presentation, and panel discussion that will critically analyze the criminal justice system. The “Behind these Prison Walls” exhibition is mobile; it can be transport to sites for a day or week exhibition. The exhibition services colleges, public school systems, churches and communities.
