This is by far the best book Ive read all year, if not in many years. I really enjoyed Zero to One by Peter Thiel, but Thiels book focused on a high-level analysis of the conditions and business patterns of creation (which is the right level for a VC). Creativity, Inc., on the other hand, is a deep analysis of the creative process itself. The popular myths of invention (e.g., the brilliant initial idea, the lone wolf inventor, etc.) are dispelled and the reality that unrelenting iteration, trial and error, and teamwork produce great works is authoritatively demonstrated. Pixars and Disneys successes lend credibility to Ed Catmulls core thesis on creativity and the book features numerous specific pieces of day-to-day advice. Not only has Pixar had an unusual amount of Zero to One successes (essentially every movie being a creative process that starts from scratch), but Ed and John Lasseter were able to turn a faltering Disney Animation Studios around with no change in staff to produce hits like Tangled and Frozen using the very creative processes outlined in the book. Awesome.
