This is disgraceful stuff, Discovery. Ive contributed to Discovery HD Theatre, Discovery and TLC across many hundreds of hours of broadcast. Doing narrative work is fine, and these nets are gaining many viewers through these shows. However, passing these fictional programs off as factual, science-based documentaries drastically undermines the networks brand and credibility. Such programming stunts (and the unavoidable fracas that follows) have diluted Discovery Channels enviable tiffany position among broadcasters from NatGeo levels to something more akin to third-rate SyFy status. The easy fix is to create appropriate disclaimers that wrap around at each commercial break, warning viewers that the following is a work of fiction. DCI... stop embarrassing yourself, and diminishing the effectiveness of the real science programming you were once known for.
