This is disgusting and unethical. Just like in sports, where some violations are worse than others, in corporate spying and manipulation, some manipulations are worse than others. And shame on you too, Cornell University, for participating with Facebook without the kind of true Informed Consent you taught me was required for social psychology experiments. Facebook might not have broken the law. Not exactly. Cornell, and University of California - San Francisco certainly did. I have either personal or immediate family ties to both institutions (a family member is at UCSF-Hastings Law right now) and I am disgusted with them both. This Slate article is just one of the several that hit the news today: slate/articles/health_and_science/science/2014/06/facebook_unethical_experiment_it_made_news_feeds_happier_or_sadder_to_manipulate.html Theres another good overview at The Atlantics The Wire. Want to discuss this more? Heres where: https://plus.google/+MarkMercer https://twitter/mcmxs On hiatus, at least, from Facebook. Seriously, Ill be at Google+ which has a lot more interesting stuff for longer-form and circle/group discussions, or on my Twitter.
