This is exactly what I thought about The Herald/FIU flap. The FIU Athletic Department is completely inept and ridiculous, but so what if they didnt give you a press pass? Know who else deals with limited access? EVERY OTHER TYPE OF JOURNALIST. If the job is to cover something of import to the community that isnt exactly rosy, people in power will always try to limit your ability to cover it. Journalists are tasked with reporting on topics of interest or importance to the community, whether were given special access or not. Journalists face limited access when they cover city hall, the courts, even in entertainment, and yet they report. That is the job. Why does sports get this weird privilege? I respect The Herald and its journalists immensely, but I think choosing not to cover a topic important enough to dedicate a beat writer to it because you didnt get special access is a lousy precedent.
