This is extremely rare that I will comment on one of my online direct sales companies on my wall but the event that took place on Saturday the 18th merits it. As most of you that know me, know that I am an avid label reader and reject a long list of additives, high fructose corn syrup, anything hydrogenated etc and preservatives. So when I found sodium benzoate as one of the ingredients in the tooth polish, I was shocked and devastated and subsequently contacted, via email, the Founder, CEO and Formulator of Essante Organics, Mr. Michael Wenniger. It was not long after I got a reply with his answer and his phone # in case I needed to speak with him. As it turned out I was not quite sure of his response and decided to call him. Mr Wenniger is well versed in organics and was able to explain in detail that the ingredient in question was organic in nature, not formulated in the lab and can be found naturally in plants fruits and vegetables thus innate in this form, however mixing it with vitamin C and E causes a reaction producing Benzene. The biggest problems are the herbicides, insecticides and insecticides that are sprayed on our food that are carcinogenic. To collaborate what he said here is an excerpt from the Organic Institute “Sodium Benzoate (211) is used in carbonated drinks, oral medications, mouthwashes and added to acidic foods such as pickles, fish and oyster sauces, salad dressings, jams and fruit juices to enhance their flavour. Even though sodium benzoate is found naturally in cranberries, plums, prunes, apples, cloves and cinnamon, it does not play the role of a preservative in these fruits and spices. Sodium benzoate has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It works by entering the individual cells in the food and increasing the overall acidity of the food, thus creating an environment in which microbes and fungi cannot grow and spread. When mixed with vitamin C, sodium benzoate forms benzene, a known carcinogen. The rate at which benzene is formed is affected by exposure to light and heat, as well as the time spent on the shelf from production to consumption. Some studies have shown that sodium benzoate along with artificial food colourings may increase hyperactive behaviour in some children”. Needless to say I was very impressed with Mr. Wenniger’s knowledge and the fact that he took the time out of his busy schedule on a Saturday to personally assuage my concerns. I can say with certainty that not many CEOs would take the time to explain in detail about the ingredients of the products. As we were conversing further it became very apparent that his philosophy about health, environment and the company, is closely aligned with mine. I can say that I am extremely pleased to work with a company that can state to be 1 of 6 companies worldwide to have the 100% toxic free seal. I cannot give enough accolades to the company and to the awesome team I am with. Thank you Mr. Micheal Wenniger, Jojo Williams, Cheryl Lynn Ivany and Karla Ivany Daniw for all your help and support and making this a superb experience. Eliane Pool
