This is for any of you out there that are a bit of a novice when it comes to Blue Crabs. Blue Crabs are most yummy when steamed in beer and Old Bay with their shells already off. This little video, made by one of the owners daughters, will teach you how to shell and clean them before cooking. The only thing missing in the video is pulling the sponge off if there is one. If you dont want to clean them before cooking, still make sure to pull the sponge off. Shes using an oyster knife in the video to clean them. To steam them, you need Old Bay Seasoning, a can or bottle of cheap beer, and a stock pot with a lid. (A round rack that will fit the bottom of your pot or a steamer basket is helpful, but not required.) Make sure youve rinsed the crabs off with fresh water as well. 1. Pour the beer into the stockpot. 2. Put in your first single layer of crabs, shell/cleaned side up, and season heavily with Old Bay. 3. Repeat step 2 until youve filled the pot. 4. Turn on the heat and bring to a boil. Medium-High is sufficient. Once boiling, the beer creates the steam. 5. Steam until the crabs are orangey-red. (Typically 3-5 min, but what your eyes see is the best indicator for doneness.) 6. Take them out, let them cool, crack, pick, and eat. If you didnt clean them beforehand, follow the same steps in the video to clean them after cooking. Picking tip 1: Use the claw tips to help push the meat out of the small shell chambers in the body. Picking tip 2: A nutcracker, pliers, or small hammer is effective in cracking the claws for the claw meat. Apply careful pressure, you want to crack the claw, not shatter it. Clean-up tip: Spread newspaper on the table before picking. Then you can roll the whole mess up in the paper when youre done and place in a tightly tied garbage bag so it doesnt stink to high heaven by the next day. . #CleaningBlueCrabs #CookingBlueCrabs
